|a إن نظرية الفونيم نظرة حديثة غربية بامتياز في تقنينها، عربية في جذورها، وفي مبادئها، ونروم في هذه الدراسة إلى الكشف عن ملامحها في أول معجم لغوي عربي عام، كانت مسألة "الترتيب الصوتي" أهم مبدئ تقوم عليه نظريته المعجمية، وهو "كتاب العين" للخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي، إذ نجده قد تطرق في ثنايا معجمه إلى جل المبادئ التي سطرها الغرب حديثا بخصوص هذه النظرية. وقد أسفرت هذه الدراسة على وعي العرب عامة والخليل خاصة بمضمون النظرية ومبادئها، ولكن ما كان ينقصهم هو التقنين وجمع المفاهيم وبلورتها في شكل نظريات، الأمر الذي جعلهم في مصاف الأتباع للغرب في مسائل عدة لجل العلوم.

|b The Phoneme Theory is a modern Western theory in its codification, yet Arabic in its origin and principles. This study aims at revealing the Phoneme Theory features in the oldest Arabic dictionary, which is Kitab-Al-’Ayn of Al-Khalil Ibn Ahmad Al-Farahidi. The "phonemic arrangement" was the core principle of Al-Khalil lexicon theory. Remarkably, most of Al-Khalil’s principles were recently adopted by Western scholars. The results indicate that Arabs and Al-Khalil particularly were aware of the Phoneme Theory; however, they were unfamiliar with codifying, synthesizing concepts and formulating them into theories. This has made Arab scholars in dependency on Western sciences.
