يسود الاعتقاد أن المعتزلة فرقة فكرية بحتة، لا سياسية، وهذا الاعتقاد ليس دقيقا، فالمعتزلة فرقة سياسية أكثر مما هي فكرية، فقد تمت صياغة هذا الفكر لخدمة المعتزلة والزيدية في حروبهم ضد بني أمية، فقد كان المعتزلة أتباعا للزيدية في هذه الحروب، وقد تعرضوا للقتل والتنكيل ومصادرة الأموال، ومن ثم لم يكن بوسعهم القول إن أفعال العباد من قضاء الله وقدره؛ لأن في هذا القول تبريرا لكل ما فعله الأمويون بهم، ومن ثم تمت صياغة باب العدل كله على أساس نفي تقدير الله تعالى لأفعال العباد، وكذلك أصل التوحيد؛ لأن معرفة الله تعالى هي أساس باب التوحيد، وهي فعل من أفعال العباد، ومن ثم لزمهم القول إنما نظرية استدلالية، تحصل عن طريق نظر العبد وفعله، ولو كانت ضرورية فطرية لكانت من فعله تعالى فيهم، ولإثبات هذه المعرفة استخدموا دليل "الجواهر والأعراض"، ولزمهم على أخذهم بهذا الدليل نفي المكان والجهة، ومن ثم الرؤية لله تعالى في الآخرة، وكذا لزمهم نفي جميع الصفات عن الله تعالى، والقول بخلق القرآن. أما أصل "الوعد والوعيد" فهو يمثل عندهم "الترغيب والترهيب"، الترغيب في آل البيت، والقتال معهم، وبذل الأنفس والأموال دونهم، والترهيب من خلاف هذا، القتال مع أعدائهم، أو الرغبة بالنفس أو المال عنهم، فهذه كلها كبائر، وصاحب الكبيرة خالد مخلد في النار. أما أصل "الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر" فهو أكثر أصولهم وضوحا في خدمته لأغراضهم السياسية، ففيه وجوب الخروج على الحاكم الظالم- والذين هم بنو أمية- وتخيلوا لو أن المعتزلة والزيدية قالوا بعدم جواز الخروج على الحاكم المسلم الظالم، كيف سيسوغون قتالهم لبني أمية؟! فهذا كله يثبت أن الزيدية والمعتزلة فرقتان سياسيتان، لا فكريتان.
