|b This article aims to review the current drug treatment policies and practices in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Critical theory approach was used to assist policy makers, treatment professionals working in drug treatment centres, and researchers involved in developing drug-treatment policies and practices in KSA to understand the real situation and focus on areas requiring improvement in KSA. It is expected that the findings may have wider implications for the development of welfare policies in this country. Major policy issues pertaining to drug treatment policy and practice, such as drug treatment legislations, social welfare policies and quality of services, available to males who are addicted to hard drugs, such as heroin, cocaine and amphetamines are discussed in details. Implications of these issues on hard drug abusers are critically evaluated. Although drug treatment policies and practice in KSA have developed markedly in the past four decades. This paper highlights several shortcomings in the Saudi approach to drug treatment policy, social services, and associated mental health problems and ensured a review of drug addiction policy and treatment in KSA from a critical perspective. Based on the findings of this review, the paper will not only propose appropriate suggestions regarding possible improvements to drug treatment policies, but it will also highlight the extent to which people with drug addiction problems are treated within the social welfare system in KSA. The review is presented in six sub sections: Hard drug problems in KSA; legislation on hard-drug use in KSA; treatment services for people with hard-drug use in KSA; policies and practices related to drug problems; social services and social welfare policies relating to hard-drug use in KSA; and shortage of professionals and addiction treatment centres in KSA.
