المستخلص: يحاول هذا البحث أن يعرض صورة المرأة الأمريكية كما عكستها رواية "كانت عيونهم تراقب الله" للكاتبة زورا نيل هيرستون. كما تحاول هذه الدراسة أن تعرض خلفية عن "نهضة هارلم" وتأثيرها على العديد من الكتابات خلال هذه الفترة. يلي ذلك تقديم لأهم النقاط التي تناولتها الكاتبة فيما يتعلق بالضغوط التي تتعرض لها المرأة الأمريكية بشكل عام والأفريقية بشكل خاص؛ بالإضافة إلى تحليل لأهم أسباب تلك الضغوط بالإشارة إلى النظرية النسائية. كما تحاول الكاتبة أن تجسد المرأة الأمريكية بشكل مختلف عما نعرفه تماما. فهي إيجابية لا سلبية، متعاونة لا متكاسلة، لديها ثقة بالنفس وبحث دائم عن ذاتها القوية التي تكمن بداخلها، لا متراجعة ولا مستسلمة لواقعها المرير وأيضا مدافعة عن زوجها وعائلتها.
كما يحاول هذا البحث أن يعرض حياة الكاتبة من خلال مقدمة تشمل أهم الأعمال الأدبية وأسباب اهتمامها بشئون المرأة الأمريكية حيث تعتبر الكاتبة واحدة من أهم العناصر المشاركة في "نهضة هارلم".
كما يتناول هذا البحث صورة المرأة الأمريكية كمحققة لذاتها من خلال شخصية "جيني" برواية "كانت عيونهم تراقب الله" التي تعتبر من أجمل الروايات التي جسدت بحث المرأة عن الذات واستمرارية المطالبة باستقلال الهوية ضد سيطرة الرجل والمجتمع. وعلى الرغم من قلة شعبية هذه الرواية عند بداية ظهورها بسبب تجاهلها لوصف ارتقاء العنصرية إلا أنها تعتبر من أرقى الأعمال في يومنا هذا سواء في الأدب الأفروأمريكي بصورة خاصة أو في أدب المرأة بصورة عامة. كما أعطاها استفتاء جريدة "التايم" لعام 2005 أنها واحدة من أهم 100 أفضل رواية أدب إنجليزي منذ عام 1923 وحتى الآن.


This research attempts to present the image of American women as reflected in the novel "Their eyes were watching God" by the author Zora Neale Hurston. This study also attempts to present a background on the "Harlem Renaissance" and its impact on many writings during this period. This is followed by a presentation of the most important points addressed by the writer regarding the pressures faced by American women, in general, and African women, in particular, in addition to an analysis of the most important causes of these pressures by referring to women's theory. The writer also tries to embody the American woman differently than we know entirely. She is positive, not negative, cooperative, not lazy, has self-confidence, and is in constant search of the strong self that lies within them. She doesn't retract, nor does she surrender to her bitter reality and defends her husband and her family.
This research also attempts to present the writer's life by introducing the most important literary works and reasons for her interest in American women's affairs. The writer is considered one of the most important elements involved in the "Harlem Renaissance." This research also examines the image of American women as self-fulfilling through the character of "Jenny" in the novel "Their eyes were watching god." It is considered one of the most beautiful novels that embodied women's search for self-help and the continued demand for identity independence against the control of men and society. Although this novel was unpopular during its beginning because it ignored the rise of racism, it is considered one of the finest works of today, both in Afro-American literature, in particular, and in women's literature, in general. The referendum of 2005 conducted by the "Time" magazine called dit one of the top 100 best English literature novels since 1923 till date.
