The Effect of Watching TED Talks Based Activities on Developing University Students’ Academic Speaking Skills

المستخلص: This study aimed at developing the academic speaking skills for university students by using TED Talk based activities: pre, while and post activities. For this purpose, 70 university students from various majors, yet with the same English Language level: upper intermediate; B2 according to the European Framework, were selected and divided into two groups: experimental and control, to represent the participants of the study. The academic speaking skills, to be developed for university students, were determined through the use of a checklist. Then, an academic speaking pre/post-test was designed and administered to the participants of the study. An observation sheet was designed and applied by the researcher to evaluate the students‘ delivery academic speaking skills. Moreover, the researcher designed academic speaking activities (pre, while and post) based on 8 TED Talks chosen by the researcher to meet the university students fields and majors to be utilized in the experiment. During the experiment, participants of the study attended academic speaking input sessions, watched a TED talk per session and did pre, while and post academic speaking tasks. The statistical analysis of the data obtained from the pre/post-test administrations and the pre/post observation sheet application showed evidence that using TED Talk based activities: pre, while and post activities had a large effect size on developing university students' academic speaking skills. Thus, the results suggested that using TED Talk based activities was significant for interactively involving university students in academic speaking contexts and was also recommended for developing their academic listening skills.
