نبعت الديانة اليمنية القديمة من بيئة وواقع جنوب شبه الجزيرة العربية، والشيء الملموس فيها هو تغلغها في حياة اليمنين القدماء في فترة قبل الإسلام، إذ ظهر ذلك من خلال تشييد المباني العامة والمقابر وكذلك المباني الدينية وغيرها؛ لأن العقيدة الدينية هي الدافع المعنوي للحياة، فأصبح التطور في الفكر الديني، فازدهرت الحياة الدينية في جنوب شبه الجزيرة العربية ووصلت إلى مستوى عال من الرقي والتقدم خلال الألف الأول قبل الميلاد حتى منتصف الألف الأول الميلادي، وهذه الحضارة قامت بها عدة ممالك، شغلت كل واحدة منها جانبا مهما في تلك الحضارة، ويقتصر هذا البحث على دراسة الفكر الديني وأثره على الممالك اليمنية القديمة، والتي نجحت في تاريخها بالتركيز على المعبودات المعروفة، وكذلك على معابدها وطقوسها التي مارستها الممالك الجنوبية القديمة، وتناول البحث الجانب الديني لما له من أثر كبير في الحضارة البشرية، فالديانة تسهم في تحديد شكل الأنظمة السياسية والاقتصادية وغيرها من الأنظمة، ولذلك فإن دراسة ديانة أي حضارة تساعد على معرفة تاريخ تلك الحضارة، ومعرفة آراء شعبها عن الكون وخالقه، وتأثير الإنسان فيه.
