تشهد المجتمعات الإنسانية مع مطلع القرن الحادي والعشرين ثورة هائلة في المعلومات، ناتجة عن التطورات العلمية والتكنولوجية السريعة في علوم الفضاء والاتصالات، والتي جعلت من العالم بأسره أشبه بقرية صغيرة لا تربطها الطرق البرية كما كان في القدم، بوسائل المواصلات كما كان الحال منذ سنوات قليلة، بفضل أجهزة الاستشعار عن بعد التي تتجول في الفضاء راصدة كل ما على الأرض، أن شبكات المعلومات التي فاضت على العالم بكم هائل من المعلومات وأتاحت لكل سكان الأرض، الأمر الذي جعل من هذه المعلومات مطلبا للحياة البشرية ولبقاء الإنسان ورفاهيته، إذ أتاحت تلك المعلومات للإنسان الفرصة في إدارة العديد من الظاهرات الجغرافية بتوقعها وتوجيهها لخدمة المجتمع ورفاهيته. إن هذا الابتكار الذي سمي يومئذ بالـ "الحاسوب"، الذي تسلل الحاسوب إلى كافة المجالات والتطبيقات العلمية المتقدمة وإلى الألعاب والتسلية وبرامج المحاسبة وإدارة الأعمال إلى الوسائط المتعددة. ولم تكن الجغرافيا خارج نطاق الحاسوب، حيث أعتبر الكثيرين من العاملين في مجال صناعة القرار الجغرافي المخططين الحضريين ومديري الموارد الطبيعية أن إمكانات الحاسوب هي الأداة المناسبة لاستيعاب الإمكانات الحاسوبية ومناهج الجغرافية الكمية معا. ضمن هذا الإطار الواعد أسمي فيما بعد بـ نظم المعلومات الجغرافية.
