أدى وصول الحزب الفاشي الإيطالي إلى سدة الحكم وتولي بنيتو موسوليني منصب رئيس الوزراء الإيطالي في عام ١٩٢٢، إلى تعالي الأصوات بضرورة إيجاد مستعمرات لإيطاليا أسوة بالدول الاستعمارية الأخرى، لاسيما وأن مستعمراتها في ليبيا وارتيريا والصومال لم تكن تحقق طموحاتها، فكان لابد من احتلال أثيوبيا لإحياء أحلامها في بسط سيطرتها على البحر الأحمر والمتوسط وإقامة إمبراطورية واسعة ترضي أطماعها الاستعمارية. أكتسب الغزو الإيطالي لأثيوبيا أهمية خاصة، لما أدى إلى اختلال موازين القوى السياسية لا على صعيد القوى المحلية في المنطقة فحسب، وإنما على صعيد الأقطار الممتدة على الساحل الغربي للبحر الأحمر والقرن الإفريقي. وكان لمصر موقفا واضحا من ذلك الاحتلال لما يربطها بأثيوبيا مصالح مشتركة، لاسيما منبع نهر النيل. قسم البحث على مقدمة ومبحثين وخاتمة، تناول المبحث الأول الموقف الرسمي المصري من الاحتلال الإيطالي لأثيوبيا، والعقوبات الاقتصادية ضد إيطاليا، أما المبحث الثاني فتناول الموقف الشعبي المصري من الاحتلال الإيطالي لأثيوبيا. أعتمد البحث على مصادر متنوعة تأتي الوثائق في مقدمتها، ومنها الوثائق غير المنشورة والموجودة في دار الكتب والوثائق ببغداد، والوثائق البريطانية غير المنشورة، فضلا عن الوثائق المنشورة والتي تمثلت في الكتب الوثائقية، كما اعتمد البحث على المصادر العربية والأجنبية والصحف والمجلات. وفي خلال كتابة البحث واجهت صعاب عدة، منها عدم تمكني من الحصول على الوثائق الإيطالية التي تسلط الضوء على موضوع البحث، وقلة المصادر الأجنبية والعربية التي تبحث في علاقات إيطاليا الخارجية، لاسيما مع مصر.
