تعد المخطوطات العربية الإسلامية الموجودة في مكتبات العالم تراثا إنسانيا على المستوى العالمي في مختلف أنواع المعرفة والعلوم، إذ إنها لم تكن مقصورة على علم معين بل امتدت لتشمل كل أنواع العلوم، وتسهيلا لمعرفة هذه الأنواع من المخطوطات فقد اقتضت الضرورة أن تعمل لها فهرسة في اغلب المكتبات، وذلك لأهميته في تحديد حجم تلك المخطوطات وإقامتها وتسهيل عمل المحققين، وكذلك تكمن أهمية الفهرسة في معرفة المخطوطات المطبوعة تجنبا للتكرار في نشر المخطوطة أكثر من مرة ولاسيما إذا كان النشر متسما بالدقة والأمانة العلمية ومتبعا أصول المنهج العلمي في تحقيق المخطوط، لذا فأن بداية النشر للتراث العربي الإسلامي المخطوط هو العمل على فهرسته لأهميته في تزويد المحقق بالمعلومات التي يحتاجها عن المخطوط، لذا تعددت الفهارس في جميع مكتبات العالم التي ضمت في ثناياها ابرز المخطوطات العربية فضلا عن نوادر المخطوطات ونفائسها، وبهذا يكون بحثنا قد قدم جزءا يسيرا من المراكز التي حفظت لنا هذا التراث العربي الإسلامي، وهذا لا يعني عدم وجود غيرها ولاسيما في المكتبات الشخصية فهي بلا شك منتشرة في أنحاء العالم العربي الإسلامي وتتطلع إلى من يعمل لها فهرسة.
