ولد الشيخ الحنفي في إحدى محلات بغداد الشعبية ذات العلاقات الاجتماعية المتشابكة، وكان لهذه المحلة تأثير عميق فيه وفي مواهبه الأولى فنشأ محباً لمحلته ولبغداد وولد مع هذا النشوء ومنذ أيامه تطلعه نحو التراث الشعبي والفلكلوري. وفي أواسط شبابه بدأ التأليف بما يهوى من تراث الموروثات الشعبية فألف عن بغداد كتباً ومقالات وأبحاثا جلبت إليه شهرة واسعة لم تكن لتتحقق لولا جديته واجتهاده واستقلاله الذاتي وعصاميته التي فطر عليها. وكانت الرحلة إحدى أدواته في الشهرة العلمية فقد رحل إلى بلدان شرقية واسيوية كثيرة وزار معاهدها الدينية والأدبية وألقى فيها محاضرات وزاد في ذلك انتدابه لتدريسه اللغة العربية بمدارس الصين وفي أثناء ذلك تعلم الصينية ونعني بذلك إن تأثير الحنفي لم يكن مقتصرا داخل وطنه بل تعداه إلى حيث رحل وأقام معلماً أو مجتهداً في نشر علمه. لم يسع الحنفي في مسيرته الطويلة هذه نحو اختزان الأموال او السعي نحو وجاهه ذاتية إنما كان هدفه الجوهري هو قوله الحق وبيان الحقائق في القضايا المبهمة في الأدب والدين والمجتمع وقد نجح في كل ذلك. وأخيراً فإن الحنفي كان نموذجاً لعقل عراقي بكل معاني العراقية المفتوحة على مختلف الآفاق أي أنه أصدر أبحاثه ومعارفه عن وعي منضبط خارج حدود القومية الضيقة أو الطائفية البغيضة والعشائرية وكل ما يخالف الطبيعة العراقية العامة السمحة والطيبة. وبهذا فقد اعطي الحنفي درساً في الإنسانية في حركة حياته منذ نعومة أظفاره إلى آخر لحظة في حياته. لذا كانت رسالته واضحة المعالم في كل مساعيه المتشعبة في العلم والمعرفة كرجل دين وشاعر وأديب وواعظ وناقد ومصلح اجتماعي ومربي موسوعي.

His message was so clear-cut in all his manifold in science and knowledge as a man of religion and a poet, writer and preacher, critic, social reformer and breeders objective.
