التلوث يعني حدوث خلل في الحركة التي تنشأ بين مجموعة العناصر المكونة للنظام الإيكولوجي، وينجم هذا الخلل لدخول نفايات الإنتاج والاستهلاك باتجاه النظام الإيكولوجي بأحجام وأنواع تفوق قدرته على التنقية الذاتية لاسيما المواد السامة أو المعقدة التي يصعب التعامل معها مما يؤدي إلى إخلال في الحركة التوافقية بين عناصره. والتلوث الإشعاعي من أخطر أنواع التلوث الذي عرفه الإنسان وتكمن خطورته في تسلله إلى جسم الإنسان والكائنات الحية المختلفة دون سابق إنذار، إذ أنه لا يرى ولا يحس ولا يشم، كما أنه ينتشر بسهولة في الهواء والتربة والماء، والإصابة به تكون مباشرة كاستنشاق الهواء الواصل إلى الرئتين ومن ثم إلى خلايا وأنسجة الجسم وكذلك عن طريق الجلد نتيجة لوجود شق أو جرح في جسم الإنسان. وأشد حالات التلوث الإشعاعي ضررا ما يصيب المادة الوراثية (DNA) في الكائن الحي مسببا طفرات تؤدي في النهاية إلى إحداث اضطرابات في الصفات الوراثية والتي تظهر في صورة تشوهات وأمراض معينة تتوارثها الأجيال كما حدث في هيروشيما ونجازاكي في اليابان وتشرنوبل في الاتحاد السوفيتي سابقا. أما التلوث الإشعاعي في العراق وبالذات في منطقة الدراسة بغداد فقد نتجت عن الحروب الأخيرة منذ 1991 إلى غاية 2003 نتيجة لاستعمال القوات الأمريكية وحلفائها ذخائر اليورانيوم مما تسبب في كوارث بيئية وصحية وخيمة كان من نتائجها انتشار أمراض السرطان، وقد بينت وزارة البيئة وجود أكثر من 300 موقع في العراق وأبرزها (5 مواقع) أكثر تلوثا بالمبيدات الزئبقية والعناصر الثقيلة الفينول المتعدد والكلور واليورانيوم المستنفذ بسبب الأسلحة المتروكة في بعض المناطق بعد انتهاء الحروب وكبريتات الكروم والسيانيد والكبريت ومركباته رابع اثيلات الرصاص، ويؤثر اليورانيوم المنضب في الصحة العامة والدليل تحولات ملحوظة في معدلات الإصابة بالعيوب الخلقية وأمراض السرطانات ملفت للنظر في بغداد (منطقة الدراسة) خلال المرحلة الأخيرة ولا سيما المدة (1991-2011).
