شكل المعتقد الديني للعراقيين القدامى محورا جوهريا من محاور استيعاب وتفهم ذهنيتهم وأساليب تفكيرهم للتشابك المفصلي الذي يقيموه أو يتصوره عن العالم السفلي وكذلك العالم العلوي، وتأثير الآلهة في صياغته وتدبير؟ فتتحول حياتهم عبارة عن رحلة قصيرة. وإن على الإنسان العراقي القديم أن يذعن خلال حياته القصيرة هذه لسلسلة معقدة من الطقوس والشعائر المتراكمة بفعل الزمن والمرتبطة بالعالمين السفلى والعلمي، وأن المسافة الفاصلة بينهما تشكل الميدان الواقعي والفعلي لتلك الممارسات التي تهيمن على تفكير الإنسان القديم في بلاد الرافدين، ويوظف لها جميع مجهوداته العقلية والروحية، ومن ثم تبدأ إسقاطات ذلك على مختلف مناحي الحياة من أدب وفن وغيرها. إن الفن فى مختلف المجتمعات هو بمنزلة مرآة لكل نشاط المجتمع، وسجل لوعي أفراده. وهناك شواهد كثيرة تؤكد على أن الفن ينمو مع الدين ويزدهر في أحضان المعابد. وقد عكس الفن في العراق القديم، عبر مختلف العصور، وعي الناس وإدراكهم للكون والعالم، فهو لم يكن منفصلا عن الدين، بل يرتبط به ارتباطا وثيقًا، لقد كانت الفنون بشكل عام تصطبغ بصبغة العبادة.

The art in different societies is a mirror of all community activity, and a record of awareness the people, who follow it. There are many evidences that art grows with religion and developed in the temples. In ancient Mesopotamia, art has reflected, throughout the ages, people's awareness and realization of the universe and the world , it was not separated from religion, but was closely related to it, so maybe say, the arts were generally take of worship.
