The Eastem Rif formed a fertile area for the penetration of the commercial influence of the imperialist powers, especially Spain, which has worked hard to penetrate to the region from the occupied city of Melilla, which benefited from the previliges during the second half of the 19‘c. On the other hand, France tried to achieve the same goal from the Morocco- Algerian borders, where the Franco-Spanish competition grew so as to extend the commercial influence on the region. Alhough the eastern Rif was within the scope of the Spanish influence, yet France, thanks to its economic strength, has managed to compete with Spain; the fact that exhauted the Spanish bourgeoisie which weakend its position in Rif. Amazingly, the measures which the Spanish government to ok so as to encourage itstrade, France and England were the biggest benificiaries from these me asures. |
