المستخلص: folk dance stems from inherited rituals that show inherited characteris-tics and customs of a society transmitted from generation to another. It is usually held in social and religious occasions. Dancing with the sword has been there fora longtime, in Asia, Africa and Europe, with certain practices according to the culture of every region. This kind of dance combines the art of dance with the sword that the fighter is proud of and never aban doned by him. The study seeks to identify the psychological and environmental factors that have driven communities living in southern Egypt to practice this artistic ritual. It follows two approaches: the first is to address the characteristics of the tribes who practice dancing with a sword and explain the kinetic performance of those dances, in addition to introducing the musical instruments accompanying them. The second is field gathering in two of the targeted areas with some dancers with a sword, to explain the mean-¬ings of the performed movements. Those dances have a special nature which requires high fitness. The dancer's love for what he does is demonstrated in his skill in performing difficult movements and his fusion with the music that sends him to another world. Music is necessary in the balance of the dancer who holds the sword and sways until he puts the back of his head on the ground from behind: a difficult process that requires fitness and balance. Someeven make this movement while sitting. Movements vary according to music and the creativity of the dancer whose imagination is directed to produce movements that reflect his mood while dancing. When the dancer fuses with music and singing, he feels like a knight, and separates from those around him. He feels that he is in a war fighting enemies, which nourishes his manhood and heroism. This art has many traditional artistic origins that have not changed significantly. It has faced many life changes, but stillretains its social function and status; a case which deserves studying and understanding the psychological and social factors surrounding it.
