إن لعبة الهويات في جوهرها لعبة تخيلات ثقافية وتصورات رمزية فالهوية فردية خالية تعمد إلى فبركتها الجماعات التي فقدت سطوتها وتوهجها بتشتت جذورها الجامعة، عبر اختراع مجموعة سرديات مصطنعة لكي تجمع جماهيرها، وتصنع من خلال تلك السرديات المكثفة إرادة كافية لاسترداد مجدها المفقود، فوجدنا أن شخصية اليهودي "يوسف سلمان" كانت تنتمي للزمان أكثر من انتمائها لأية هوية متداولة فهو لم يكن يهودياً فترك إسرائيل بعد زمن قصير من تهجيره إليها ولم يكن شيعيا رغم تستره بقناع "حيدر سلمان" وزواجه من ابنة تاجر البازار "إسماعيل الطباطبائي"، ولم يكن سنيا رغم أن "نادية العمري" استطاعت أن توفر له منفى داخليا يتجاوز إشكاليات الجغرافيا و أوصلته لبغداد ثانية، ولم يكن عراقيا أيضا رغم أن بغداد كانت هاجسا يحمله في كل منفى، إنما هو يتعرق بقوة إلى الزمن الجميل الذي عاشه الطفل "يوسف سامي" خاليا من كل أوثان المكان، على أن العلاقة المركبة بين إحساس الشخصية بالانتماء للوطن- الزمن - ونبذ الوطن- المكان لها، جعلها تنزوي مجبرة في منطقة التوتر فلا تستطيع فيها أن تكون ذاتها في الواقع بصورة معلنة، ولا تستطيع أيضا تتعايش حينما تكون هي غيرها بإرادتها، فتبتكر فكرة الأقنعة المتعددة رغم أنها تخاف من التخفي والتزييف، لكن هناك خوف أكبر يجعلها تمارس تلك اللعبة بلذة وإتقان، فثمة دائما كائن خفي يقبع خلف الوجه المعروف. إنها لعبة تلفيق وافتراضات وتأمل ومعرفة بالتاريخ وخيال مفرط يجد تجلياته وسط التناقضات.
