ظهر فيروس كورونا المستجد (covid-19) مع نهاية عام 2019 في ووهان بالصين؛ وأنتشر تدريجيا في جميع دول العالم، ولأنه فيروس مستجد فإن منظمة الصحة العالمية أعلنت عن عدم وجود علاج محدد أو لقاح لهذ الفيروس، وتركزت تعليمات المنظمة على وضع قيود للسفر ورفعت شعار (البقاء في المنزل (Stay Home- ولعل ما يزيد من خطورة هذه الأزمة على السياحة أن عدد الإصابات المؤكدة بالفيروس سجلت في قارتي أوربا وأمريكا الشمالية؛ وهما أكثر قارات العالم إرسالا واستقبالا للسائحين، بل إن قارة أوربا هي القارة السياحية الأولى في العالم. ومن ثم واجهت السياحة العالمية أزمة طاحنة غير مسبوقة وهى الأولى من نوعها بسبب جائحة (كوفيد- 19). وقد وصفت منظمة السياحة العالمية الأزمة بأنها غير مسبوقة وأن قطاعي السياحة والطيران هما القطاعان الأكثر تضررا من الأزمة ووفقا لتوقعات منظمة السياحة العالمية؛ فقد ينخفض عدد السائحين في العالم بنسبة تتراوح بين 20 % إلى 30 % في عام 2020، وسينخفض الدخل السياحي العالمي نحو الثلث تقريبا؛ أي إن القطاع السياحي العالمي سيخسر من 250 إلى 400 بليون دولار أمريكي بسبب هذه الأزمة، إلا أن الخسائر التي حدثت فاقت التوقعات كما سنعرض فيما بعد.

The World Tourism Organization described the crisis as unprecedented and that the tourism and aviation sectors are the two sectors most affected by the crisis and according to the expectations of the World Tourism Organization. The number of tourists in the world may decrease by between 20% and 30% in 2020, and global tourism income will decrease by about a third; In other words, the global tourism sector will lose from 250 to 400 billion US dollars due to this crisis. However, the losses that occurred exceeded expectations, as we will show later.
