|a مع ظهور نظرية الرواية الجديدة أخذ (المكان) يؤدي دورا طليعيا في تشكيل الخطاب الروائي، وفي تشكيل فضاءاته والشخصيات على نحو يفوق. أحيانا -دور السرد والزمن والدراسة التقليدية للشخصيات. فالان روب غرييه وأتباع مدرسة الرواية الجديدة يحطمون الزمان بوصفه مقياسا لمغزى الحياة، ويحلون المكان محله، لأن وجود الأشياء في المكان أوضح وأرسخ من وجودها في الزمان. في نظرية الرواية يدخل المكان عنصرا رئيسا لا يمكن تجاوزه في أي عمل روائي، وقلما نعثر على تعريف للرواية يهمله، فالشخصيات تحتاج مكانا لحركتها، والأحداث لا تحدث في الفراغ، وسردها يستحيل إذا تم اقتطاعها وعزلها عن الأمكنة، فلا شيء يجري ما لم يجد ما ينشئ جريانه عليه، وأيا كانت السيرورة الروائية زمنية أو مكانية أو نفسية أو سياسية ٠٠٠إلخ، فإنها تحتاج مكانا تسير فيه، والصيرورة تحتاج مكانا تؤول إليه مهما كان شان المكان ضئيلا، وأيا كان دور الفعل الروائي الذي ينسب إليه.
