المستخلص: The insurance business was introduced in Algeria by the colonial administration. Before 1830 the Algerians lived in community and it was the principle of solidarity and mutual aid that predominated. Since 1962 many reforms have concerned the insurance sector in Algeria. Despite this, this sector, which can contribute to financing development, lags considerably behind the rest of the world. The personal insurance branch is lagging behind more markedly, even though it is supposed to play an even more decisive role in the financing of development. The purpose of this paper is to specify how the insurance sector has evolved since independence. After a global comparative approach, an explanatory approach of this evolution is proposed. L’activité des assurances fut introduite en Algérie par l’administration coloniale. Avant 1830 les Algériens vivaient en communauté et c’était le principe de solidarité et d’entraide qui prédominait. Depuis 1962 de nombreuses réformes ont concerné, le secteur des assurances en Algérie. Malgré cela, ce secteur qui peut contribuer au financement du développement accuse un retard considérable par rapport au reste du monde. La branche assurance de personnes accuse un retard plus marqué, alors qu’elle est sensée jouer un rôle encore plus déterminant dans le financement du développement. L’objet de ce papier est de préciser comment le secteur des assurances a évolué depuis l’indépendance. Après une approche comparative globale, une approche explicative de cette évolution est proposée.
