This study investigates Franz Kafka’s (1883-1924) The Metamorphosis published during the Russian Formalistic literary movement in (1915). It explores the idea that Kafka’s novella structure and theme were in response to the works of Viktor Borisovich Shklovsky published between 1893 and 1894. The focus of the study is the theory of social isolation, as described by Kafka in The Metamorphosis, and the concept of defamiliarization from Shklovsky’s work Art as technique published in 1917. |
