520		\|b Casbah or "Old Medina" is considered as an architectural form that had spread in North Africa. It is also a model of traditional architecture, yet it is qualified as a defensive architecture, which raises a problematic in its concept and function. In this paper I tried to answer the question in relation with the region of Gourara (province Touat). We conclude that it was the first nucleus of construction in those areas, and it was arranged to be used in case of necessity, which gives a defensive characteristic.
