المستخلص: Les épitaphes d’Afrique romaine constituent un corpus qui a longtemps défié la perspicacité des archéologues et plus précisément les spécialistes de l’épigraphie latine. Si celles de Gaule, d’Ibérie ou d’Italie offrent une diversité et notamment pour le formulaire lui permettant de se distinguer par rapport aux autres provinces ou villes dans une même province, celles de l’Afrique constituent pour J.M Lassère «une plaie pour l’étude de l’épigraphie latine». Ce constat exprimé sans découragement, puisque le savant épigraphiste y consacra un ouvrage de grande importance, est valable pour ceux qui l’ont précédé dès le 19ème siècle. La raison principale en est «la banalité du formulaire» qui, chez Charles Vars dans son ouvrage «Cirta, ses monuments, son administration, ses magistrats», donne le ton d’un postulat ayant amené l’auteur à en prendre son parti en révélant qu’exceptée la connaissance de l’onomasticon de Cirta, «les inscriptions funéraires innombrables ne présentent en général que fort peu d’intérêt». Nous avons choisi de nous intéresser aux épitaphes de la ville de Cirta et de nous pencher sur cette banalité, non dans le but d’infirmer mais dans l’espoir d’en dégager d’autres questionnements susceptibles d’intéresser des questions autres que l’onomastique.

The epitaphs of Roman Africa represent a corpus that has long challenged the curiosity of archaeologists and more specifically epigraphists. While those of Gaul, Iberia or Italy offer diversity and especially for the form, that distinguishes them from one province or city to another, those of Africa are for JM Lassère, following P. Gauckler a plague for the study of Latin epigraphy. This statement expressed without discouragement, since the epigraphist scholar devoted a book of great importance, is also shared by those who preceded him in the previous century. The main reason is "the banality of the form" which, in Charles Vars's book "Cirta, its monuments, its administration, its magistrates", sounds like a postulate that led the author to attest that, except for the knowledge of Cirta's onomasticon, "innumerable funeral inscriptions generally have very little interest." We have chosen to focus on the epitaphs of the city of Cirta and to look at this banality in the hope of identifying other perspectives that may interest issues other than onomastics.
