Current expectations indicate that Sino-American trade relations may enter into a crisis that would amount to a collision in economic and political currents, as a result of pressures resulting from job losses in the American production sector, which prompted the US administration to impose tariffs and other protection measures on Chinese exports, and to include commodities. تتجه العلاقات الاقتصادية الدولية صوب الابتعاد عن المبدأ الأساسي الذي استندت إليه في حرية التجارة وتغليب العولمة، مما ينذر بولادة حقبة جديدة، تعد في واقعها ارتدادا عن مرحلة النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، إذ تشكلت مؤسسات اقتصادية دولية قادت العالم باندفاع نحو تحرير التجارة العالمية وتطبيق مبادئ حرية السوق. وتشير التوقعات الحالية إلى أنه من المحتمل أن تدخل العلاقات التجارية الصينية الأمريكية في أزمة تصل إلى حد التصادم في التيارات الاقتصادية والسياسية، فنتيجة للضغوط الناتجة عن فقدان الوظائف في القطاع الإنتاجي الأمريكي والتي دفعت الإدارة الأمريكية بفرض رسوم كمركية وإجراءات حماية أخرى على الصادرات الصينية، وشمول سلع أخرى في الحصص النسبية اكثر مما هو منصوص عليه في اتفاقيات منظمة التجارة العالمية، وفي سبيل التعويض عن سلع أخرى مثل قطع السيارات والأدوات المنزلية، والأشد من ذلك هو إذعان الإدارة الأميركية إلى المطالبة بإتباع نفس الطرق المتبعة في الصين في سبيل جعل السلع الأمريكية اكثر قدرة على المنافسة مع مثيلتها الصينية، وفي حقيقة الأمر ستكون لهذه الإجراءات التجارية الأميركية اثر كبير في الاقتصاد الصيني الذي تربطه علاقات وثيقة مع الاقتصاد الأميركي.
