المستخلص: In this study, we will stand at one of the Moroccan landmark travellars and geographers, Al Hassan Ibn Mohamed El-Wazzane, who is famous for his outstanding geographical work entitled "The Description of Africa" which was written in the middle of the third decade of the 16th century. This work is considered to be one of the important sources in the introduction of Africa including the Sudan section, presently known as Africa. In this book, the writer introduced himself as a Moroccan with a European thinking style. He wrote his book in the Latin language in Italy during the era of the European Renaissance and the geographical findings. This book provides the researchers with important and relevant information about that civilization and its peoples and cultures. Also, it does shed light on some of the mysterious periods of its history at the beginning of the modern era. With this book, the writer has contributed to the enrichment of its history by providing information about the living conditions of its inhabitants, its geography and its tracks in full details and accuracy. As the provided information about the country of Sudan was in the form of live field witnesses and observations of the visited regions and kingdoms through which he reported to us relevant and direct events related to the political, economic, socio-cultural, religious, and even natural aspects of life. Such study is characterized by a diversity between the descriptive geography and the oral narratives. That is why such a work could be considered as a historical as well as a geographical reference document.

سنقف في دراستنا هذه عند أحد أعلام الرحالة والجغرافيين المغاربة الحسن بن محمد الوزان، الذي اشتهر بالمصنف الجغرافي "وصف إفريقيا"، إذ ألفه في منتصف العقد الثالث من القرن 16م، ويعد من المصادر المهمة في التعريف بإفريقيا، ومن بينها قسم بلاد السودان أو ما يعرف حاليا بمصطلح إفريقيا جنوب الصحراء. وفي مضمون كتابه عرف نفسه أنه عربي مغربي، ذو تفكير أوربي، كتبه في إيطاليا باللاتينية، وأنتجه في خضم النهضة الأوربية والكشوفات الجغرافية. ويعد هذا القسم مصدرا يزود الباحثين بمعلومات مهمة عن حضارة شعوبه وثقافته، حيث يلقى أضواء كاشفة على بعض المراحل الغامضة من تاريخه مع بداية العصر الحديث. وقد أسهم في إثراء تاريخه من خلال هذا الكتاب، حيث يعرفنا بأحوال قاطنيها وجغرافيتها ومسالكها بشيء من التفصيل ودقة الملاحظة. لأن ما كتبه عن بلاد السودان عبارة عن مشاهدات ووصف بالمعاينة الميدانية للمناطق والممالك التي زارها. فنقل لنا أحداثا مست بشكل مباشر مختلف الجوانب السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية والدينية وحتى الطبيعية. إذ امتاز منهجه بالتنوع بين الجغرافيا الوصفية والرواية الشفوية، لهذا يعد هذا القسم كوثيقة تاريخية وجغرافية.
