المستخلص: Décrit comme étant un concept ambigu à multiples facettes, l’étalement urbain laisse jusqu'à ce jour plusieurs questions ouvertes en raison de sa nature complexe et des connotations négatives qui y sont liées. C'est pourquoi, nous tentons dans cet article de répondre à certaines questions: Quelles sont les catalyseurs de l'étalement urbain et comment se déroule-il en termes de caractéristiques et d'effets? Quelles démarches urbaines et quelles mesures devraient être prises pour combattre et gérer ce phénomène très complexe et multidimensionnel? Le procédé managérial du projet urbain qui s'inscrit dans le développement durable, permettrait-il d'accompagner l'étalement urbain d'une manière plus intelligente?

Described as an ambiguous and multifaceted concept, urban sprawl leaves many questions open to this day because of its complex nature and the negative connotations associated with it. That is why, in this article, we try to answer some questions: What are the catalysts of urban sprawl and how does it unfold in terms of characteristics and effects? What urban approaches and measures should be taken to combat and manage this very complex and multidimensional phenomenon? Would the managerial process of the urban project, which is part of sustainable development, makes it possible to support urban sprawl in a more intelligent way?
