نال كتاب " بداية المجتهد ونهاية المقتصد " للقاضي أبي الوليد محمد بن أحمد بن محمد بن أحمد بن رشد القرطي شهرة عالية، قديما وحديثاً ، وقد حظي بنصيب كبير من الاهتمام دراسة وبحثاً. وقد رأينا أن نلقي الضوء على جوانب في هذا الكتاب لم تنل حقها من الاهتمام – فيما نري- ، حتى يكون بحثنا جهداً متواضعاً يضاف إلى أعمال المتقدمين، ولم نلتفت إلى كثير من المسائل كفانا مؤونة البحث فيها الكثير من العلماء السابقين. بدأنا البحث بتمهيد يتضمن تعريفاً موجزاً بالقاضي ابن رشد الحفيد، من حيث أسمه، مولده ، نسبه، شيوخه، تلامذته ، العلوم التي برع فيها ، محنته ووفاته.
