|a الحركات الاجتماعية بالنسبة لألان تورين ليست محض موضوع جزئي في السوسيولوجيا بل إنها الموضوع الأساس الذي يجب أن تنشغل به، وذلك لأن الحركات الاجتماعية نفسها في المجتمعات الحديثة هي ليست مجرد ظواهر استثنائية على هامش المجتمع، في تعبير عن الصراع الأساسي الذي يحدد التوجهات الثقافية الكبرى التي ينظم المجتمع ذاته من خلالها، إنها بعبارة أخرى، حقل الاهتمام الذي يسمح بالوقوف عند ديناميات الصراع الأساسي في المجتمع، وهو الصراع حول التحكم في التاريخانية، والصراع من أجل تحقيق الذات الفاعلة لذاتها.

|b Social movements according to Alain Touraine aren’t just a particular object of sociology, in fact they are a central problem on which we should focus, and that’s because they aren’t just a marginal phenomenon, but rather an expression of the central social conflict in modern society, that is the conflict over the control of cultural orientations by which society organizes itself. In other words, social movements are the field on which we can observe the central conflict dynamics in society, that is the conflict over the control of historicity, and the realization of the subject actor.
