المستخلص: The study aims to analyze the reality of household spending on the main commodity groups and how the distribution of individual spending on these groups and estimate the elasticity of spending demand and the marginal tendency of consumption to identify the nature of consumption patterns and saturation levels by sectors of the main commodity groups. The method of quantitative analytical analysis was based on cross-sectional data for the Iraq poverty monitoring and evaluation survey for 2017 using Engel function. The food group ranked first in the average total expenditure per capita (32.4%) ‘followed by the housing ‘fuel and energy group (24%) ‘then the transport group ‘which ranked third (12.1%). On the other hand ‘Other commodity groups are classified as luxury and semi-luxury according to their spending elasticity ‘with the consumption pattern consistent with the three commodity and service groups (food ‘housing and transport) between 2007 and 2017. Accordingly ‘the Iraqi consumer with low and below average saturation in most of the major commodity and service groups as evidence of the high values of spending elasticity of demand ‘where they were greater than the correct one.
