شهدت الكتابة تطورات أقل سرعة من غيرها، وإن كانت ذات مغزى عميق، فهي تمثل حركة دائمة لا تكاد تتوقف، فقد مرت بأطوار قبل أن تصل إلينا كما هي الآن إلا أن تلك الأطوار قد اختفت وإن كانت من المسلمات في وقتها؛ إذ كلما توصلت المجتمعات البشرية إلى طريقة أو تقنية كتابية واتخذتها وسيلة للتعبير عن الفكر ظهرت مجموعة تنادي بالتصويب والتطوير فتبادر إلى اقتراح طريقة جديدة للوصول إلى مستوى الكمال. ولقد مرت الكتابة بمراحل في ضوء الصيرورة هذه حتى تصل إلينا بهذا الشكل. ولما كان المهم هو الوصول إلى الحقيقة دائما، ظهر دعاة من علماء اللغة المحدثين يدعون إلى تطوير الكتابة وتحسينها للوصول إلى الكمال، وذلك بتحقيق التوافق بين الصوت والصورة والذي يتم بما يعرف بالكتابة الصوتية. ويرى المحدثون أن القدماء قد وقعوا في جملة من الأخطاء يعود سببها إلى ربط النظام الصرفي بالكتابة (=علم الرسم)، واستغناءهم عن جزء هام من الأصوات المنطوقة، وهو الحركات فقد اقتصرت الكتابة على الصوامت في إثبات رموز صوتية، كما أن نظام الكتابة يعاني من اشتراك صوتين برمز واحد، كما أنهم اتهموا القدماء بسذاجة التصور وقصور منهجهم، وعدم دقة النتائج التي توصلوا إليها؛ نتيجة التأثر بالكتابة. فهل تخطئة القدماء على هذا النحو أمر مقبول؟ وهل قرأ دعاة اتجاه المنهج الصرف الصوتي القديم قراءة صحيحة ودقيقة أم لا؟
