الكثير من التحديات التي تواجه العملية السياسية الحديثة في الدولة، ومنها التحديات الاجتماعية التي تواجه العملية الانتخابية، وأهم تحدياتها الداخلية مشكلة تأثير العوامل الاجتماعية في سلوك الناخب والمرشح الذين لهما خصائص اجتماعية مؤثرة في الأداء الانتخابي، وفي العملية السياسية برمتها، ومن ثم تحديد عائدها الديمقراطي للدولة، والجغرافية السياسية تهتم بدراسة وتشخيص تأثير تلك العوامل وتأثيراتها البيئية على سلوك الناخب في اختيار شكل العملية السياسية في الدولة ومن ثم تجسيدها وترسيخها وتثبيت بالعمل الديمقراطي فيها، وأن الهدف الأساسي منها التعرف على السلوك الانتخابي والعوامل التي تؤثر فيه وتساهم في بنائه وتحديده ، والدراسة محاولة لتسليط الضوء أكثر على هذه العوامل التي تمثل في الوقت نفسه محددات لهذا السلوك في العملية الانتخابية والعملية السياسية بشكل أوسع.
