Since the publication of Marcel Benabou's book, The African Resistance to Romanization in 1976, much ink has been spilled over the Roman-African socio-cultural aspects. Unfortunately, the territory of the Tunisian High Steppe has remained for a long time unnoticed. That is why, this article sets out to analyse these aspects in the sector which unites the three big cities of the western Byzacene: Sufetula, Cillium and Thelepte. To do so, onomastics represents a fundamental support in this research. The sociocultural evolution is manifested essentially in the adoption of imperial gentiles and the gentiles of Roman governors in Africa since the beginning of the High Empire. However, this social and cultural advancement did not prevent the persistence of the African heritage until the end of the High Empire. As a matter of fact, the existence of citizens carrying duo nomina or tria nomina does not exclude the existence of natives bearing only unique names. |
