المستخلص: تتناول هذه الدراسة تسمية نون الوقاية ووظائفها اللغوية، وتستقصي آراء اللغويين العرب القدامى للوقوف على تعليلهم سبب تسميتها ووظائفها اللغوية ومواطن إلحاقها أو حذفها، وتتفحص الشواهد اللغوية والأمثلة المختلفة لتبين حقيقة هذه الظاهرة في ضوء معطيات الدرس اللغوي المعاصر، ولاحظت أن هذه الظاهرة لم تحظ باهتمام اللغويين العرب القدامى والتوجيه المعمق لوظائفها، فكان جل ما وقفت عليه لديهم يؤكد مجيئها في سياق وقاية الفعل من الكسر. وقد رصدت في بحث هذه الظاهرة جملة من الشواهد تبين أن نون الوقاية تقع في الأفعال والأسماء والحروف، وعليه فإن علة عدم كسر الفعل لا تمثل القول الفصل في تعليل هذه الظاهرة؛ فثمة علل ووظائف أخرى تفسر وقوع نون الوقاية، نحو: الوقاية من تشكل المقطع المرفوض، والوقاية من تتابع الحركات، والوقاية من اللبس بين بعض الصيغ الصوفية، من مثل مش: ياء المتكلم المفعول المذكر وياء المؤنث الدال على الفاعل في صيغتي الأمر: (علمني) و (علمي)، إذ إن الفارق بين الصيغتين هو نون الوقاية والضبط، وإضافة إلى تلك الوظائف السابقة يبرز دور نون الوقاية في الحفاظ على معنى حركتي الإعراب والبناء والقيم اللغوية المتضمنة في هاتين الحركتين.

This study aims at clarifying naming and functions of preventive nun (=Wiqaya nun) phenomenon as presented in Arabic language and old Arab linguistic studies. In order to accomplish its main aim, the study reviews the viewpoints of old Arab grammarians, who paid a few attention to this Morpho-phonological phenomenon. It, also, investigates the phenomenon phonological structure through out referring to textual evidences, that adapted by old Arab grammarians, and examples, that are realized in Arabic, As a sequence, it has been observed that old grammarians explanation of preventive nun occurrence centered on verb regular formation case, in term of remaining marks of the inflected and uninflected verbs, precisely when these verbs are suffixed with (i:) as personal pronoun. The study also shows, among its other conclusions, that, preventive nun, may, occurs in different word classes, including verb, noun, preposition. In addition to that, it shows other functions of preventive nun, namely its role and impact on Arabic syllable formation, as it suffixed to prevent vowels consecution within the same syllable on one hand, and to prevent forming discarded syllables in phonological Arabic system (i,e $vv $) on the other hand. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that, preventive nun has a crucial morphological importance in distinguishing between morphemes in Arabic, such as{ #gil $ lim $ni;#), which means (teach me), and (qal $ li $ mi:), which means (teach), where the two verbs are used in indicates imperative mood, while the (i:) Suffix within the first word refers to object pronoun, and the (i:) suffix within the second word refers subject pronoun of feminine. Beside that the study emphasizes the influence of preventive nun, when it is occurs as separable suffix, in remaining inflected and uninflected word marks, as they have morphemic function.
