تشعبت اللغة العربية منذ العصر الجاهلي إلى لهجات حضرية حجازية، ولهجات بدوية نجدية، تعبر كل منها عن حاجات أهلها، وبما أن العوامل الجغرافية والظروف الاجتماعية تختلف بين الكتلتين، فقد انعكس ذلك على لهجات كل منها من حيث أصوات الكلمات، والبنية، ومظاهر الإعراب، ودلالة الألفاظ. الكتلتان تشتركان في قدر كبير من الصفات اللغوية والعادات الكلامية، وذلك لأن لغتهما الأم واحدة هي اللغة العربية؛ إلا أنه توجد بينهما فروق ملحوظة. فقد مالت القبائل البدوية بصفة عامة إلى السمات الصوتية التي تتناسب مع الخشونة وجفاء الطبع الذي فرضته ظروف الحياة القاسية في الصحراء، في حين أن القبائل الحضرية اختارت السمات التي تتناسب مع الليونة ورقة الطبع. ومظاهر الاختلاف بين هاتين الكتلتين تمثل لنا وبوضوح مظاهر الاختلاف بين لهجات البدو والحضر، ويأتي في مقدمة ذلك الاختلاف من الناحية الصوتية. وقد اخترت البحث في "السمات الصوتية في لهجات الحجاز ونجد".
