يشار إلى أن وسائل الاتصال الجماهيري تمثل ركنا أساسيا في تشكيل الرأي العام في عالمنا المعاصر، فعلى ضوئها يتمكن الجمهور المتلقي من التواصل مع الأحداث المحلية والعالمية. بصورة مباشرة فضلا عن دورها في تكوين الانطباعات إيجابية لدورها، في تشكيل الآراء والاتجاهات للناس ذلك أن انتقاء بعض الأخبار دون الآخر، والتركيز على جانب معين وإغفال جوانب أخرى، والتفنن بطرق صياغتها وأساليب تقديمها كل ذلك يمكنه أحداث تأثير معين علي الرأي العام، لما للأخبار من دور فعال في تشكيل رأي عام مساند للقضايا التي تتناولها في ضوء ما تقدمه من مضامين وآراء تدعم وجهات النظر التي تطرحها، وانطلاقا من هذا الفهم لأهمية وسائل التواصل وإدراكا لما تمثله وسائل الأعلام الرقمي وعموما من أهمية كبيرة في نقل واختيار الأخبار فضلا عن دورها في التأثير في الرأي للجماهير في المجتمع وانطلاقا من ذلك وجدت أن دراسة المصادر التي يستقي منها الجمهور العراقي الأخبار من الأهمية بمكان لا سيما، وكان الباحث يأمل من بحثه أن يحقق الأهداف المرجوة والمتمثلة في الوصول إلى المصادر التي يعتمدها الجمهور العراقي في استقاء الأخبار، وتحديد أي من وسائل الأعلام أخرى التي يوليها اهتمامه، فضلا عن فهم العلاقة القائمة بين المتغيرات الأساسية للجمهور: (الجنس، الفئة الاجتماعية، مستوى التعليم) وعملية تلقي الجمهور للأخبار من خلال الصحافة الورقية والإلكترونية وانتقائه لوسائل الأعلام التي يعتمدها مصدرا لاستقاء الأخبار لتحقيق هذه الأهداف في تكوين الرأي العام.
