The present article focuses on the evocative power of two basic notions in the writing of Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, which are the visible and the invisible; a duality that haunts almost all his texts particularly in ‘Lorsque j’étais une oeuvre d’art’. The novel portrays the story of a character who becomes an object, a work of art, and expresses an external beauty measured and conditioned by the contemplation of the other. He releases himself to recognize his true value thanks to his quest for spirituality. Will the author succeed to anchor his spiritual enterprise through this exchange? Cet article interroge la force évocatrice de deux notions essentielles dans l’écriture d’Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, à savoir le visible et l’invisible, qui hante presque tous ses textes notamment ‘Lorsque j’étais une oeuvre d’art’. Le roman relate l’histoire d’un personnage qui devient une oeuvre d’art, un objet archétypal d’une beauté sans âme mesurée et conditionnée par le regard de l’Autre. Il se libère et connaîtra sa véritable valeur grâce à sa quête de la spiritualité. L’auteur réussira t-il à inscrire son entreprise spirituelle à travers cet échange? |
