|b This article is about Carson McCullers' “A Tree. A Rock. A Cloud.” and Ernest Hemingway's "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place". Both stories take place in cafés, which provide major thematic and aesthetic connections to investigate. I argue that the key characters in both narratives are looking for meaning in their lives. To do so, they must confront the cynicism that pervades the cafes’ otherwise peaceful and welcoming environments. Cafés have transformative power in each of these texts. While adopting a comparative approach, this essay seeks to relocate McCullers in the modernist canon.
