This study departs from Systemic Functional Linguistics to provide preliminary theoretical and practical observations on ellipsis as a grammatical cohesive factor contributing to text coherence. Understood as such, ellipsis in the Qurʾān is less frequent. Arabic linguistics, in approaching ellipsis in the Qurʾān, lacks the textual view since it has been and continues to be exclusively governed by syntactical rules. To compensate for the contribution of ellipsis to text, the Qurʾān incorporates other coherent aspects, most notably the referential relationship, as well as other stylistic techniques. More research is required to get a more thorough knowledge of ellipsis in the Qurn, which will eventually contribute to ellipsis theory in the Arabic language.
