|b The present paper sets out to study the way Caliban’s subversive potentialities as a political rebel and a defiant colonial subject are sub¬sumed and ultimately contained. Caliban, The Tempest’s focal ethnic/ cultural other, is represented as an unorthodox, perfidious and disrup¬tive character who threatens Prospero’s hegemonic control over the island. The threats of subversion and sedition, however, are eventually neutralized and dispelled. Caliban’s stormy contravention turns out to be nothing but a tempest in a teapot. He ends up serving and reaffirming the very ideologies and discourses (political and colonial) he has tried to oppose and disrupt.
