المستخلص: يمر الإنسان عبر مراحل حياته المختلفة بمجموعة من التغيرات التي تمس جميع جوانب شخصيته الجسمية والانفعالية والمعرفية والاجتماعية وغيرها، وتستمر هذه التغيرات مع الإنسان إلى لحظة وفاته، وتعد مرحلة الشيخوخة محصلة لكل التغيرات التي حدثت معه على مر السنين، هذه المرحلة التي يعتبر نزلاؤها من بين أكثر فئات التربية الخاصة مدعاة للاهتمام باعتبار أنها مرتبطة بتدهور في الحالة الجسمية والنفسية وحتى الاجتماعية في مقابل مراحل العمر السابقة. وإذا كانت الشيخوخة مرحلة بيولوجية حتمية، وهي انعكاس للتطور والنمو الذي يمر به الفرد، تتسم بالانحدار الدائم والمستمر الناجم عن تراكم وتكاتل العوامل الضارة التي تحقق تدهورا عضويا ووظيفيا مستمرين فإنها في نظر المسنين أنفسهم مرحلة غير مرغوب بها فبالإضافة إلى ما يرتبط بها عند البعض من أمراض، ومعاناة كالاكتئاب، والخوف من الموت، والانطوائية وغيرها هي عند الأغلبية الزحف ببطء نحو النهاية، لذا أصبح مثل هؤلاء الأشخاص مدعاة للاهتمام أكثر من غيرهم لإعانتهم على تحقيق التلاؤم والتكيف مع مستجدات الحياة المختلفة وبالخاصة ممن يعانون منهم من مرض الزهايمر أو ما يعرف أيضا بالعته الشيخوخي، والذي هو موضوع مقالنا هذا.
