|a تتناول هذه الورقة البحثية رصد ومحاولة تفسير لعادة وسم دواب النقل لاسيما الجمال والحمير بالحروف الكتابية حيث كانت الحروف أحد أنواع علامات الوسم المتعددة التي وسمت بها الدواب في مصر في عصر الرومان سواء كانت بالحروف اليونانية أو العلامات العربية. تظهر هذه الممارسة بوضوح في الوثائق البردية التي تذكر الأوصاف التفصيلية للدواب مثل عقود البيع والشراء أو أوصاف الدواب المسجلة في الإيصالات التي تثبت مرورها بالمراكز الجمركية؛ لذلك اعتمدت هذه الورقة البحثية على الوثائق البردية في المقام الأول لرصد ووصف هذه الممارسة ثم محاولة تفسير دلالة الحروف المستخدمة في وسم الدواب والتي كانت تشير في الغالب إلى أسماء ملاك الدواب خاصة أول ملاكها أو إلى نوعية الدابة خاصة في حالة الجمال المجلوبة من بلاد العرب ومناقشة أراء بعض الباحثين في هذا الصدد، وقد كان الباعث لملاك الدواب على وسم دوابهم بالحروف الأولى من أسمائهم هو تمييز الدابة في الأسواق والمراعي وعند تأدية الخدمة الإلزامية حتى يمكن رد الحيوانات إلى ملاكها الشرعيين بعد أداء الخدمة أو لمنع سرقتها ودفع الضرائب المستحقة عليها بعد الشراء أو البيع.

The letters were one of the many types of markings that were marked by animals in Egypt during the Roman era, whether in Greek letters or Arabic signs, This practice is clearly shown in the papyrus documents, which mention the detailed descriptions of the animals, such as the sales and purchase contracts or the descriptions of the animals registered in the receipts that prove their passage in the customs centers. Therefore, this paper relied on the papyrus documents primarily to monitor and describe the practice, The characters used in branding the animals, which often refer to the names of the owners of the animals especially the first owners or the type of the animal, especially in the case of camels brought from the Arab countries and discuss the views of some researchers in this regard, was the motivation for animals owners to brand their animals in the first letters Of their names is to distinguish the animal in the markets and pastures and when performing compulsory service so that animals can be returned to their The rightful owners after the service.
