|b This article explores how Emerson’s thought on women evolved throughout his career, shifting from a conservative standpoint to a modern-like version of empowerment. It also takes into account the ideas of fellow transcendentalist, Margaret Fuller, whose approach to emancipating women from social bondage remained firm and unchanged. Emerson’s position, however, kept changing in proportion to the historical context, and he became more and more in favour of making women’s place in society comparatively similar to that of men. Starting out as a conservative who demanded women’s obedience, he ultimately ended up as a prevalent defender of their rights, becoming the vice president of the New England Women’s Suffrage Union.
