كغيرها من الثقافات التي تلتف حول موروث مقدس، كان لابد أن تعالج الثقافة اليابانية إشكالية ضبط العلاقة بين موروثها والتصورات والمعارف الوافدة، سواء كان ذلك الوافد من القارة الأسيوية أو من الغرب الاستعماري الذي كان يرى موانيها محطة هامة لحركة التجارة العالمية. ورغم المحاولات العديدة لتحقيق ذلك، فإنه يلزم التنويه بأن أغلب تلك المحاولات أنشأت في حد ذاتها أشكالا مختلفة من الصراع يسعى كل شكل منها إلى إزاحة الآخر. وإذا كان الوضع الذي شهدته اليابان للعلاقة بين الموروث والوافد كان دوما مرتبطا بطبيعة خطاب السلطة، الذي ينبغي الانسجام والتجاوب معه حتى تتحقق الوحدة السياسية، فإن ذلك يدفع إلى افتراض أن القاعدة التي تتشكل وفقا لها تلك العلاقة المتغيرة ترتبط بسعي دؤوب لخلق بنية ثقافية تؤصل لتمايز تلك السلالة التي تقطن إمبراطورية الشمس المشرقة، وعلى النحو الذي يحقق لها الاكتفاء الذاتي والتفرد. وهكذا تكمن قيمة نص "الكوجيكي" Kojiki ليس فقط في أنه يكشف عن ذلك التساجل بين الوافد والموروث، ومن ثم خلق حالة ثقافية استطاعت هضم كل التنوعات بصورة فريدة، بل أيضا في بلورة منظومة القيم القادرة على معالجة الاضطرابات الناتجة عن التغيرات التي شهدها الواقع في القرن العشرين.
Like other cultures that concern themselves with a sacred heritage, the Japanese culture had to deal with the problem of controlling the relationship between its heritage and the perceptions and knowledge coming from the Asian continent or the colonial West, whereas the latter regarded its ports as an important station for the movement of global trade. Despite the numerous attempts to achieve this, it must be noted that most of such attempts have created different forms of conflict, each of which seeks to displace the other. If the situation that Japan has witnessed for the relationship between the inherited and the foreign has always been linked to the nature of the discourse of power, which must be harmonized and responded to in order for political unity to be achieved, then this leads to the assumption that the base according to which this changing relationship is formed can be linked to a tireless quest to create a cultural structure that roots for the differentiation of the dynasty that inhabits the Empire of the Rising Sun, in a manner that achieves its self-sufficiency and exclusivity. Thus, the value of the Kojiki text lies not only in that it reveals the controversy between the foreign and the inherited, thus creating a cultural that was able to uniquely digest all the diversity, but also in crystallizing a system of values, capable of dealing with the disturbances resulting from the changes happening in reality in the 20th century.
