|a Emmanuel Kant is considered by his contemporaries as one of the greatest exponents of the Enlightenment. Kant in deed consistently endorsed the great Enlightenment values. However, after the publication of his essay on radical evil in 1792, Goethe and others claimed that he had renounced Enlightenment values. A meticulous reading of the essay and of the book “Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason" shows that the radical evil that Kant employs does not correspond to the notion of original sin. Radical evil does not preclude Man’s responsibility. Evil exists only because Man is free.
|b Kant est vu par ses contemporains comme l’un des grands représentants des Lumières. En effet, il n’a cessé de défendre les grandes valeurs du siècle des Lumières. Cependant, en rédigeant un article sur le mal radical en 1792, Goethe et autres vont dire que Kant a renié aux valeurs des Lumières. La lecture attentive de cet article et de l’ouvrage : La religion dans les limites de la simple raison, montre que le mal radical, dont parle Kant est très loin du péché originel. Le mal radical conserve toute la responsabilité à l’homme. Il n’y a du mal que parce que l’homme est libre.
