|a لعبت مملكة أرمينية الصغرى دورا بارزا في التاريخ الوسيط، خاصة في القرن السابع الهجري/ الثالث عشر الميلادي، لما لها من موقع جغرافي مميز بالإضافة لقربها من منطقة الصراع الصليبي الإسلامي في بلاد الشام، ومن ثم تعد السياسة الخارجية لمملكة أرمينيا الصغرى تحت حكم أسرة هيثوم وأثرها على صراع القوى في الشرق الأدنى (٧١٦-635 ه/1220-1237 م)، من الموضوعات الهامة، إذ في الوقت الذي واجهت فيه أسرة هيثوم تحديات داخلية هامة، تعرضت في الوقت نفسه وفي ظل الصراع الدائر في الشرق الأدنى، كان على هيثوم وأسرته التعامل مع خطر السلاجقة الطامعين بزعامة سلطانهم علاء الدين كيقباذ في الأراضي الأرمينية، كذلك تأثرت تلك الأسرة بأحداث الصراع الصليبي الإسلامي.
