عاش أبو الحسين البصري في فترة كانت فيها من الصراعات الفكرية والثقافية والدينية في أوجها وكان موقفه إزاء ذلك مطابق مناصر لما للأفكار والاتجاهات العقائدية التي سار عليها الفكر الاعتزالي. تلقى أبو الحسين البصري علومه على أكابر علماء وشيوخ المعتزلة في عصره ومنهم قاضي القضاة عبد الجبار الهمداني. وقد كشف عن الكثير من مصنفاته في مختلف العلوم سواء أكانت الشرعية والفلسفية وغيرها. ابتعد أبو الحسين عن التقليد والالتزام؛ بفكر معين بل كان له اجتهاده الخاص به في بعض المسائل والتي خالف فيها المعتزلة وشيخه عبد الجبار ولهذا يعد أبو الحسين البصري من المجتهدين في مذهبه وكان ذا مكانة علمية رفيعة عند علماء الاعتزال وغيرهم في المذاهب الأخرى ومن خلال مصنفاته.
Abu Al- Hussein Al- Basri lived in a period when intellectual, cultural and religious conflicts were at their height. Abu Al- Hussein Al- Basri received his knowledge from the most prominent Mu'tazilite scholars and sheikhs of his time, including the judge of judges, Abdul-Jabbar Al- Hamdani. Abu Al- Hussein Al- Basri added through his fundamentalist workbook (The Approved) his own curriculum by mentioning his own opinions, whether they are in agreement with the doctrine or in opposition to it, and respond to those who oppose it. He also followed the method of the theologians, and this method stems from the method of the people of reason in presenting their origins over a rational approach in determining their origins in the creed. Linking the topics with the doctrine of retirement in terms of mental improvement and ugliness, and the rational approach, method and approach were on the method of the theologians that Abu Al- Hussein Al- Basri followed. For this distinguished his scientific and mental approach to inference.
