Recently, scholars have been less tempted to take the subject of the poetic text at face value. Arguing poetry's elusive relationship to reality, they announce the death of the authorial self. My present paper is an attempt to see the classical poetry in a different perspective, even though stressing the dialogue between contemporary criticism and classical writing. I try to read the speaking voice of some classical literary texts towards a re-evaluation of the personal element in ancient poetry. An involvement with modern literary theory and modern trends in criticism is inevitable in this re-evaluation. I argue the influence of modern critical modes of thought in reading a certain sort of classical poetic texts. I take as examples particular texts from Latin poetry, which at the same time reflect the poet's awareness of other poets' poetry. This awareness makes my goal in analysis far more meaningful for my argument, because it indicates the poet's private voice. I focus attention on two elements: -The proud self-confident assertion, in first person statements, that a poet is unique and will live on in his work. The figure of the poet is represented through the poet's claim to immortality. -Assertion on the poet's part of his own poetics. The poet is certain of the rightness of his literary views within the literary tradition known to him. I argue that the poetic self in such classical poems is not a textual creation, the first person signifies the poet himself, the poetic text in this case is self-reflective
