The creed of Salaf has become the main essence of the formation of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah long before the khalaf sect exists. The implementation of Islamic creed among the companions of Muhammad p.b.u.h and tabiin is the best model for all people to carry out the obligation to worship Allah alone. On the other hand, the dominance of the Ashairah and Maturidiyah creeds inherited for centuries in the archipelago have contributed significantly to the continuation of the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah sect but at the same time, without anyone notice, this domination has narrowed the understanding of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah among muslims as the Salaf creed is not considered part of the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah. Worse comes to worst, this phenomenon has resulted in a split and hostility of fellow Muslims. Ironically, the Malay scholars of the past have never denied the Salaf Akidah as a stream in the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah. As a matter of fact, the solution to this crisis has long been pioneered by Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Mandili, a prolific scholar who has introduced the Salaf Akidah to the Muslim public in Malaysia. His work entitled A Shield For Those Who Are Commissioned Or Faith Knot According To The Salaf is a translation and explanation to Akidah al-Tahawiyah and can be considered the earliest work that examines the debate and the principle of the Salaf faith in Malay for the views of Muslims in the Nusantara. The findings of this qualitative study show that the description of Akidah al-Mandili applies the full principle and understanding of Salaf in every debate highlighted.
