Immediately after the Second World War, the US engaged in containing the Communist threat in various parts of the world, including North Africa. Drawing on Joseph Nye’s theory of soft power, this article seeks to add to the literature on the Cold War in North Africa by investigating the policies adopted by the US to contain the Soviet threat in Tunisia. It adopts a qualitative study of primary and secondary sources dealing with American foreign policy during the Cold War, the cultural Cold War and American policies in the Middle East and North Africa, and attempts to unravel the multifarious political, economic and cultural ventures pursued by the US in Tunisia, revealing their impact on the country and its people. |
