|b Imposing economic sanctions is one of the tools used to shape or change a regime of a particular state in modern history. This tool can be used by states unilaterally such as the United States, or by international organizations such as the United Nations. This article therefore tends to explore the topic of economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations and takes Libya as a case study. The aim behind this research is to study the legal process by which the Security Council can impose economic sanctions and to test the effectiveness of such a tool in achieving its objectives in Libya. The article concludes that other factors led Libya to comply with the United Nations demands and not the efficiency of economic sanctions as it is alleged.
