مرت الإضاءة بالعديد من المراحل حيث برزت الحاجة إليها منذ عصور ما قبل التاريخ لسد نقص الإضاءة الطبيعية بالإضاءة الصناعية. تعد الإضاءة من اهم العناصر المؤثرة في مجال التصميم الداخلي - ولم تقتصر علي هدف الإضاءة فقط بل إنها تعدت هدفها الحقيقي لتنضم إلى ركب التطور والإبداع ، والذي أدى إلى تنوع أشكالها ومصادرها المحتفلة مما جعل منها قطع فنية تبرز القيم الجمالية وتخلق تأثيرات بصرية للتصميم الداخلي وتؤكد علي القيم الوظيفية وتصبح جزءا أساسيا داخل الحيز الفراغي ذات حضور فعال يتجاوز الخصائص الكيميائية والفيزيائية والتأثيرات السيكولوجية والفسيولوجية نحو تحسين وتعزيز وإثراء التكوين النهائي للتصميم الداخلي. لذلك تأتي أهمية البحث إلى التعرف على أساليب الإضاءة الصناعية المختلفة وأنواعها ووحداتها وبيان قدرتها الكاملة وتأثيراتها الفسيولوجية والسيكولوجية وأثرها الفعلي في إبراز الفراغ الداخلي للتصميم ولتحقيق ذلك لابد من دراسة طبيعة الإضاءة وأنواعها ومصادرها. كما يهدف البحث إلى إيجاد أهم الأسس والمعايير التي يجب تطبيقها عند تصميم وتنفيذ الإضاءة في المنشأت الخاصة والعامة على حد سواء. ومن اهم النتائج أن الإضاءة الصناعية مؤثر بصري ذات تطور تكنولوجي سريع كما أن للإضاءة الصناعية العديد من التأثيرات الفسيولوجية والسيكولوجية والتي يجب استخدامها لتحقيق الجانب الوظيفي والصحي داخل الحيز الفراغي مع تطبيق أهم الأسس والمعايير التي تم التوصل إليها في البحث لتصميم وتنفيذ الإضاءة في التصميم الداخلي.
