The ancient Egyptian artist sometimes turned to symbolism when referring to his enemies since the pre-dynastic era, motivated by several reasons, including the desire to express the enemy’s gender in general without specificity. They avoided portraying aggression, regardless of who carried its banner and objected — at other times — to representing fellow citizens who were hostile to the Egyptian king in the same form used for enemies from neighbouring geographical areas. Hence, their use of symbolism carried meanings of appreciation and avoided conveying belittlement towards them. This abstract was translated by AlMandumah Inc.
